C. BERRY ACCIDENTLY KILLED
Is Struck by Board Which Came in Contact With Pulley

Charles Berry, of the milling firm of Berry Bros. of Norwood, was almost instantly killed on Friday, October 20th about the noon hour as he was at work in the flour mill. He had gone to the basement floor to clear one of the elevators which had filled up, while his brother Oscar remained on the floor above to help along with the work. Standing on part of the frame work with his back against one of the wooden spouts, Charley removed the cover, a board about two feet long and four inches wide, from the elevator and either held it or laid it on the spout near which a large belt driven pulley was in action. In some manner the cover came in contact with a spoke of the fast revolving pulley, which forced the board against Mr. Berry with such violence that two ribs were doubly fractured immediately over the heart, driving the bones against against the heart with sufficient violence to have caused his death almost immediately. However, it appears that the doomed man had strength enough to step down from the framework, walk several feet toward the stairway, and losing consciousness, fall forward. In the fall he struck his head against the brick wall, breaking his neck. His brother heard the unusual noise, hurried to the floor below and was shocked to find Charley motionless on the floor. He summoned Dr. Soper at once, but the injured man had almost breathed his last. It will never be known under exactly what circumstances the accident happened, but from an inspection of the premises it is surmised that he met his sudden death as above stated.

Charles J. Berry was a native of Carver county, having been born here June 9, 1859, and was the oldest of a family of seven children. He was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Quanstrom of Jordan, Nov. 12, 1882, and the union was blessed with nine children, six of whom are living. The deceased took up the milling business at an early age and through thorough application to the work, mastered all the details and was known as one of the best millers in the country. For twenty-one years he was engaged in the milling business at Norwood in company with his brothers, the firm having built up a large business and operate mills at Norwood, Hector and Buffalo Lake.

The senior editor of the Herald has known the deceased since he was a boy, and we always admired him for his sterling manhood. Although of a quiet and retiring disposition he enjoyed a wide acquaintance and a host of friends, who deeply mourn his untimely demise. He was buried from the family residence at Norwood Monday week, the Rev. Hopkins of Stewart and the Rev. Soper of Lester Prairie, conducting the services. The remains were taken to the M. E. church, where the Rev. Hopkins paid a fitting tribute to the life of the deceased. His remains were laid at final rest in the cemetery west of Norwood. We drop a tear to the memory of a man who was a man in the truest sense of the word.
