Birch Lake is located off of Highway 1 between Lake Superior and Ely. It's actually a reservoir, not a "real" lake, but the fish don't care. It has a 16 site National Forest Campground, and a boat launch, as well as a few resorts. It is dotted with several islands that are great to camp on and fish from. On the trip I was on in 1981 when I took this picture, we caught nice sized northern pike right from the shore of the island we were camping on. We also caught so many walleyes that year that we had to throw some back because we'd gotten more than our limit! This photo was taken on the island we camped on. As you can see, it is composed mainly of rock.

The colors in this image are lousy because the raw Photo CD image had almost no color or contrast to it at all (even though the actual photo did.) I'm still working on this one.

This photo was taken with a Honeywell Pentax SP-1000 (Spotmatic) camera using a regular 55mm lens and Kodacolor 200 film.

The digital image was created by having it put on on Photo CD, then converting and retouching it using Corel Photo Paint 5, Adobe Photo Deluxe, and Paint Shop Pro for Windows.
