Grand Marais, Minnesota is about 100 miles up the shore from Duluth, and it marks the eastern end of the Gunflint Trail. As you drive out of Grand Marais, and up the Gunflint, you'll see the Pincushion Mountain overlook on the right side of the road. This view is breathtaking! This photo was taken from that overlook in June of 1987. It had just rained, and was still raining in the distance. Steam was rising off of everything. The position of the clouds you see over the lake relative to where the sun was, made for some very interesting lighting conditions.

This scene was captured with a Honeywell Pentax SP-1000 (Spotmatic) camera using a 30mm wide angle lens and Kodacolor Gold 200 film.

The digital image was created by having it put on Photo CD, then converting and retouching it using Corel Photo Paint 5 and Paint Shop Pro for Windows.
