- First US astronaut, Alan B. Shepard, Jr., rockets into space aboard the Freedom 7.
- There are 2,000 US military advisers in South Vietnam.
- Jack Lippes develops the contraceptive intrauterine device (IUD).
- Patsy Cline releases I Fall to Pieces and Crazy.
- West Side Story is adapted for the big screen and wins Best Picture.
- 1974 graduates enter kindergarten.
- 1979/1980 graduates are born.
