- Thurgood Marshall sworn in as first black US Supreme Court justice.
- Apollo 1 astronauts are killed a fire aboard the space capsule on the ground at Cape Kennedy.
- Racial violence erupts in Detroit, NYC's Spanish Harlem, Birmingham AL and New Britain CT.
- First successful human heart transplant is performed by Dr. Christiaan N. Barnard at the University of Minnesota.
- The first Super Bowl is played with the Green Bay Packers defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.
- The 5th Dimension's Up, Up and Away wins Record of the Year.
- The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band wins Album of the Year.
- The year's movies include The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, In the Heat of the Night and Cool Hand Luke.
- Television drama Mission Impossible is the year's Emmy winner.
- Upton Sinclair, Spencer Tracy, and Che Guevara die.
