- The space shuttle Enterprise makes its first test glide, from the back of a 747.
- The neutron bomb is developed.
- Elvis Presley, Charlie Chaplin, Bing Crosby, and Groucho Marx die.
- The TV miniseries Roots draws an audience of 130 million.
- The films Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever hit theaters.
- The Minnesota Vikings lose to Oakland in the Super Bowl.
- Richfield's Central Elementary School is closed due to declining enrollment.
- 1990 graduates enter kindergarten.
- 1995/1996 graduates are born.
