The Year 1978:
- Led by President Carter, "Framework for Peace" in Middle East is signed by Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Premier Menachem Begin.
- Jim Jones's followers commit mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.
- US Senate approves the Panama Canal neutrality treaty.
- Pope Paul VI, Norman Rockwell, and Hubert H. Humphrey die.
- Balloon anigoplasty is developed to treat coronary artery disease.
- Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, is born at Oldham Hostpital in London.
- Sony introduces the Walkman, the first portable stereo.
- Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are wins Record of the Year.
- Richfield's Portland Elementary School is closed due to declining enrollment.
- Richfield's East and West Junior Highs become middle schools housing grades 6-9.
- 1991 graduates enter kindergarten.
- 1996/1997 graduates are born.
