The Year 1982:
- Israel invades Lebanon in attack on PLO.
- British overcome Argentina in Falklands war.
- Equal Rights Amendment fails ratification.
- Alexander M. Haig, Jr. resigns as Secretary of State.
- The space shuttle Columbia makes its first mission.
- MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) diagnostic machines are introduced in Britain.
- A permanent artificial heart is implanted in a human for first time in Dr. Barney B. Clark.
- Princess Grace, 52, dies of injuries when car plunges off mountain road.
- Leonid I. Brezhnev, Soviet leader, dies at 75.
- John Belushi dies of a drug overdose at age 33.
- Cats opens on Broadway, destined to become Broadway's longest running play.
- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Ghandi, The Verdict, and Tootsie are among the year's movies.
- The pop group, Toto, sweeps the Grammys.
- Michael Jackson releases Thriller, which sells more than 25 million copies.
- Richfield Schools close Elliot and Lincoln Hills Elementary schools. Sheridan Elementary becomes Sheridan Hills and along with Centennial, houses grades K-3.
- Richfield High School becomes a four year high school, with East Middle School becoming Richfield Intermediate housing grades 4-6 and West Middle School becoming Richfield Junior High with grades 7-8.
- 1995 graduates enter kindergarten.
- 2000/2001 graduates are born.
