- Reagan orders US Marines withdrawn from Beirut international peacekeeping force.
- The Bell System is broken up, with "Ma Bell" becoming several "Baby Bells".
- President Reagan is re-elected defeating Walter Mondale in a landslide.
- The Soviet Union withdraws from summer Olympic games in US, and other bloc nations follow.
- Apple introduces the user-friendly Macintosh personal computer.
- The Supreme Court rules that taping TV shows at home on VCR's does not violate copyright law.
- The Cosby Show debuts on NBC.
- 1997 graduates enter kindergarten.
- 2002/2003 graduates are born.
