The Year 1985:
- Soviet leader Chernenko dies at 73 and is replaced by Mikhail Gorbachev.
- Reagan and Gorbachev meet at summit and agree to step up arms control talks and renew cultural contacts.
- British scientists report the opening of an enormous hole in the earth's ozone layer over Antarctica.
- Tools for desktop publishing begin to be widely used with the availability of relatively inexpensive laser printers and computers.
- Coca-Cola attempts to introduce "New Coke" in an effort to attract younger drinkers. The original formula is soon reintroduced as "Coke Classic".
- Rock Hudson dies of AIDS at age 59.
- Madonna launches her first road show, the Virgin Tour.
- We Are the World, performed by various artists to aid African famine victims, wins Record of the Year.
- 1998 graduates enter kindergarten.
- 2003/2004 graduates are born.
