Message posted on Sun, 20 Nov 2005 Hello, I am a chiropractor practicing in the Netherlands, a graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University.('87) During my studies I lived with Miles and Zita Lundahl in Bloomington. His past as Richmond High's music director was a blessing, allowing me to have my drums in the basement! Since I have been in the low lands we have been keeping in touch via a yearly update with a X-mas card- usually sent to his wintertime Arizona address. I have been unable to contact Miles and Zita by phone and I am assuming that they have moved... Also there has been no reply to a letter I sent to the addresses I have in Arizona and Minnesota. Thru google I came accross the school's website and noticed that in October he gave a surprise speech during the 50th year celebrations! So it seems all is well with Miles! I am greatful for that! If someone could please give me a contact address or e-mail to get in touch with him- that would be great!!! I am planning a trip to Phoenix in Jan. and was hoping I could meet up with the Lundahl's to say hello in person after so many years. Thanks in advance for your help! Thank You to the 1980 Class Reunion Committee Members Message posted on Wed, 17 Aug 2005 I attended the 25th class reunion and had a great time. All the committee members did a great job and I especially enjoyed the slide presentation showing all our old school year photos! This year's music was better than the previous reunion because the music was from our era and not the later 1980s.Just one suggestion- next reunion keep the music volume down so we can talk at the tables and hear each other better. It was just a little too loud.I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone who has worked on the reunion committees for 2000 and 2005, for all the time and efforts that they put into these events! Great job everyone!!! Kris Jolivette If you wish to reply to this message, please send an email to Kris Jolivette. RHS 50th Anniversary Celebration - It All Began with a Dream... Message posted on Sat, 26 Feb 2005 Sometimes it occurs to me on how short life really is. During this life, if we're lucky, there will be few opportunities that will come our way to where we can make a real difference and see our dreams come true. If I live to be 100 I think that coordinating the 50th Anniversary Event for our Richfield High School will be one of those key opportunities in my life. It is a memory that is forever etched in my heart and mind. Even now as I write this story some six months after the event, I am amazed about what we were able to accomplish in October of 2004. It all began with a dream. Together, we would celebrate 50 years of our own Richfield High School. To be quite honest at the beginning of this project I wasn't sure that I would be up to the task. I had coordinated events before but never one of this magnitude. And, quite frankly, I was not one of those popular kids in High School. Don't misunderstand me, those High School years were great ones for me but I was one of those kids who was mainly in the background. But then, it seems, as we get older we can become risky and it is easier to move ourselves from the background to the front row. After all, it seems that sooner or later it dawns on us that we won't be here forever, right? And then it happened. It was February, 2004 when I became aware that the Richfield School District needed some help in planning the 50th Anniversary Event for the High School. The school opened on October 11, 1954 and the historic 50th Anniversary date was fast approaching. A light snow was falling on that March day in 2004. It was to be my first meeting with Richfield Schools Superintendent Dr. Barbara Devlin and RHS Principal Dr. Jill Johnson. We met in the Principal's Office to discuss a plan. It had been some 32 years since I was a student at the school but I still possessed some feelings of insecurity as I entered the Principal's Office. You know, in my three years at RHS I had never been inside the Principal's Office. Those of us who were in the background as kids usually didn't need to visit the Principal's Office. During that meeting I presented a plan. That plan was my dream. The plan included a timeline, the players and a show. The 'timeline' was short and almost impossible. The 'players' were all sorts of people who had no idea about the event that had yet to be announced and the 'show' was to be held the next October. It meant coordinating with RHS Alumni, Richfield School Officials , Current RHS Faculty and Students, Retired School Faculty Members and Staff and Richfield Community Leaders. As it turned out everything went according to the script. I believed that the right combination of talent mixed together with a real passion for a cause could put on a show of historic proportions. And, you know, I was right! Why were my hopes so high? Because I grew up in Richfield, Minnesota and I recall that town being a place where people do what it takes to get things done and that community being a place where dreams really do come true. My parting message to the others at that first meeting in the Principal's Office was to: "Get ready, for you will see a passion from others during the planning of this event like you've never seen before..." Well, my plan was enthusatically accepted by the Superintendent of Schools and the RHS Principal at that first meeting. Their real commitment and enthusiasm early on in the process made a real difference toward the success of the event. We had a small group meeting with some others the next week where I shared my dream. They all endorsed the plan and the vision expanded. We then began to dream about a 50th Anniversary Event which would truly honor the legacy of our Richfield High School. A key next step was to set up and publicize those famous Alumni Planning Meetings. I felt somewhat queezy during those meetings when some people from the early RHS Classes referred to me as 'the kid.' But then, at 50 years of age, it occurred to me that I do look pretty darn good at that and came to accept 'the kid' remark as a compliment. How, I wondered, do you get a group of busy people to show up to a meeting on a week night? We're all so busy, you know. Well, we did a few things to rev up the enthusiasm and get people out to those meetings. In my mind there was no excuse for people not to attend! We began an e-mail campaign to anyone we could find connected with the school. Others soon joined in and we had e-mails going throughtout the world to promote this event. Local newspapers soon caught on to what we were doing and helped to spread the word. At one point an RHS Alumnus who is now a local Radio Announcer had some of us RHS Alumni appear on his show for a full hour to publicize the event. While driving home from the radio studio after the show that night I had my car radio tuned into the show and heard a woman from Wisconsin sing the Richfield School Song! You know, those airwaves from that radio show covered over 30 states. Now that's one for the books! For our final Planning Meeting in August, 2004 I invited the first RHS Homecoming Queen, Joyce (Little) St. Angelo to attend as our special guest. I personally escorted the lovely Queen to the front of the room whre I interviewed her. With tears in her eyes she shared about the honor she felt in being the first RHS Homecoming Queen almost 50 years prior. I can still remember her words and truly believe that the enduring legacy of Richfield High School can be attributed to those students and faculty who were there in the beginning. I also brought in a cake to that meeting with the RHS @ 50 Logo printed on it. We had about 50 people attend that final planning meeting. The hardest thing about leading those meetings was that everyone seemed to want each meeting to be a reunion party I began to ask myself "How are we going to get anything done?" Dr. Jill Johnson provided encouragement to me during that time. Her message was to let things kind of evolve and great things would happen. I decided to keep with the party theme and actually found myself having alot of fun at those meetings, too. Things did get done. In mid-September I came down with a bad cold and was told by my Doctor to take it easy. How could I explain to him that I had newspaper interviews that had to get done and many other important matters to attend to? After all, it was my High School's 50th Anniversary just days away. Well I paid the price and came down with pneumonia just three weeks before the event. I remember my wife, Roxanne, an RN, saying to me at the time "You see, Norm, next time you had better listen to your Doctor." Why is it that the people we love sometimes tell us the things that we really don't want to hear? Well, I had to pull back some and lean on others. Of course many people stepped up to the plate to help. Spartan Spirit was alive and well. I began to feel better but just three days before the October 16 Open House Event I had a relapse and was extremely weak. My sister joined me for the Homecoming Football Game. The fireworks were unbelievable. It was also great to see that new scoreboard at Spartan Stadium that had been donated to commemorate the RHS 50th Anniversary. We left the game early so I could get some rest. On the morning of the Open House I woke ap and didn't know how I could carry on with managing the day ahead. But I drove to Richfield High School from my home in Lakveville and, of course, there was a crowd of enthusiastic people getting things ready for the day. I was interviewed for a Richfield Cable Show that morning. The people around me who were doing the set up work greatly inspired me so I was able to give a good interview. We were not scheduled to open the doors to the public until 10 a.m. but they were coming in droves at 9:45 a.m. so, of course, we welcomed them in with smiles to 'their' school. A Richfield Policeman commented to me that he had never seen so many cars parked around Riehfield High School for an event. The 11:30 a.m. RHS 50th Anniversary Program was something that I knew had to be extra special. The students who would be playing in the band and singing in the choir had been in other events the previous week and many were also planning to attend the Homecoming Dance that evening. Colleen Fischer, Band Director and Joanne Minnetti, Choir Director had gone out of their way to ensure the success of the event. As an incentive for the students who performed,I had arranged for gift certificates to be given our just prior to the program. You know, those kids did a great job that day and I do believe that it wasn't the gift certificates that made it happen, it was their very own Spartan Spirit that made them shine. 'God Bless America' had never been sung and played so perfectly and our own Richfield High School Song was played and sung with great enthusiasm. At showtime my body temperatute was probably around 100 degrees when I got up on the stage to begin the show. But, you know, I was the host and the show definately had to go on. The audience was so kind and they applauded enthusiastically as I walked onto the stage. They even laughed at my jokes. Their warmth provided the healing that I needed at the time. I have never been so honored in my life (the only exception being when my wife agreed to marry me.) Featured speaker and former RHS Band Director, Miles Lundahl, was a real hit. There were gasps from the audience as he walked toward the stage to speak. There, indeed, was a feeling of real love and admiration in the RHS auditorium on that day. Over 1300 peoole packed that space for the program but we were definately one in spirit. Some have compared Mr. Lundahl's speech to the 'Mr. Holland's Opus Movie' I agree. The video that was produced by Dale Strom and Sue Borne from Borne Recording was also a hit. All copies of the video sold out minutes after the program ended. The school lunches also sold out fast. Well, unfortunately, the day had to come to an end but in many ways it was a day that will be in our hearts and minds forever. I still hear from people who were at RHS on that October day and they tell me that it was an 'awesome' event. We pulled together to honor our beloved Richfield High School. I recently received a phone call from a representative from another Twin Cities School District who was aware of our event. He asked me what we did and how we did it. I said that it was a combination of loyalty, love and laughter that made it happen. It had to do with some wonderful people who had a real passion for their High School in Richfield, Minnesota. I didn't have the heart so say that others could never repeat what we did. I really do believe this to be true. Well, now that I have fully recovered from that great event, I wonder this: What will the history books say about that Saturday in October, 2004. Probably not much. But books, you see, never really tell the the full story. Many times the most important stories of our lives remain in our hearts. For those of us who were involved with the planning and for all of the 5000+ people who attended the RHS Open House, it will be a memory etched in our hearts and minds forever. And it all began with a dream that would turn out to be a memorable experience for each of us who participated in the RHS @ 50 Event. An event that turned out to be a real tribute to our Richfield High School, the school we 'love so dear.' Sincerely, Norm Plasch, RHS '72 RHS @ 50 Event Coordintator If you wish to reply to this message, please send an email to Norm Plasch. I still think about it from time to time. It was extremely well done and I enjoyed it immensely. I was there the first day the school opened -- actually before it opened, during construction -- and it seems like only yesterday. Thanks again. Class of 1972 - Post Holiday Party - Review Message posted on Tue, 1 Feb 2005 First, a short note from me, Steve Grindeland, one of your many reunion committee volunteers: Thank you to all of you that were able to attend our 2nd annual Post Holiday gathering at Steak & Ale on Saturday night, January 22nd. I for one had a blast. Saturday night, I had an opportunity to meet several classmates that I never met during high school. I believe we have become friends and that they will be attending future gatherings. Sue Post, and as I understand it, about 20 others are discussing the possibility of a Class of 1972 Caribbean Cruise. Now wouldn’t that be fun! Would any of you like to join them in this adventure? Please let me know and I will gladly pass your name along to them. If anyone would like to plan other gatherings, please let us know too, so that we can help get the word out. At 1 AM, on the way out of Steak & Ale, Tom Jarzyna expressed his thoughts about a possible old-fashioned barn dance. Yet another fun idea. On the way home, all I could do as smile and think to myself how lucky I am to part of such a nice group of friends. For those of you that were unable to attend this year, I hope you won’t miss our next gathering. Remember our motto: Enthusiasm breeds Enthusiasm The following are a few responses we received about our post holiday party. Dear Class, It was an awesome night. I never knew I had so many friends. Thank you Steve for all your hard work. Laughter and friendships renewed is how I would describe our get together. LINDA SANTIAGO-MOTZKO It is really fun connecting with classmates at informal get togethers on a more frequent basis. The picnic this summer and the recent evening at Steak and Ale were both very fun. A big thank you to the people who make these arrangements . . . I hope more people will take advantage of these opportunities in the future. Susan (Pygman) DeGolier "I really enjoyed the time. It was fun to meet some old and new friends. Much as changed with all of us and it was difficult to remember how each one look back so long ago. I also enjoyed meeting Scott Shepard since his son is seeing my daughter. Who knows what the future will be for those two. What a small world! Hope to see more at the next meeting." John Gunderson On Saturday evening, January 22, 2205, I attended the Richfield High School Class of 1972 Annual Reunion at the Bloomington Steak and Ale. It was great to see all who attended. Due to a family commitment I was not able to stay very long but a few of us met for an early dinner, which proved to be a real highlight for me. Steve Grindeland and I had dinner with four remarkable and beautiful ladies from our class. Early in the dinner conversation I made the remark to someone that I had dated three of the girls at the table. And there we were, having a wonderful dinner together 35 years after high school! I went on to mention that I had taken one of them (referring to another person at the table) to the state fair on a date. She looked at me and said "You know, Norm, you also took me to the state fair on a date, too!." I am glad she stirred my memory for I do remember having a wonderful time with her at the fair. Anyway, thank goodness for grace and understanding as we get older. Looking forward to seeing you all again at our next RHS Class of '72 Event. -Norm Plasch "Its absolutely remarkable to me that even after several decades I can reconnect with old friends and fall back into a comfort zone that only comes with knowing people, some starting with KINDERGARTEN! What made the night especially fun for me was a great band with era music and I had NO inhibitions about WILDLY dancing like we did at sock hops and coffee houses. I had a BLAST, cold sober, laughing all night, reminiscing, and feeling grateful that I grew up in RICHFIELD!!!!! COME TO THESE EVENTS!! karen lillquist As always, it was great to see everyone, catch up, and have alot of fun!! There just never seems to be enough time to visit with everyone as much as I would like but am so thankful for the chance to do it more frequently than every 5 years! We really have a great class and a special thank you to Steve, Bryan, and the rest of the committee who have worked so hard on everything!! Twylla Salo What a great time catching up and remembering with some special folks. This is almost better than the 5-year reunions because I had more time to spend with each person. I'm already looking forward to next year !! Bob Kalwat It was wonderful to see old, familiar faces and even some new ones! It was especially fun to see how old clique or crowd boundaries have become blurred. Everyone was well-accepted and intermingled nicely, savoring our common bond of having once attended RHS? Jack Jodell Miles of smiles is what I saw as I sat back and observed the groups of fellow classmates reminiscing about the old days and catching up on the new. The highlight of the evening was seeing our special friend and classmate David Bremseth enjoy a night out on the town. David told me he was counting all the hugs he received from all the ladies and he really enjoyed the pictures with the girls. David asked me if he could have a rum and coke and I said why not your not driving and you are certainly old enough! On the way home he told his chauffeur Steve Grindeland he had a great time. I believe David's attendance is prime example of the all inclusiveness we are trying to achieve with our reunion get together. Questions like when is the next newsletter coming out? Are we going to have a summer get together or something in the fall were heard several times throughout the night. The other message we are trying to achieve is that it's not just about high school and we are not trying to live in the past but it's a chance to journey back for a night to when life was simpler and a lot slower paced, it took forever to reach 18 but in the blink of an eye we are celebrating 50 together. Just as the enthusiasm was felt at the high school 50th reunion you could feel it Saturday night as I listened to the conversations, several new classmates attended who had not attended in years again adding to the enthusiasm and that welcome home to the old neighborhood feeling. The food and music was great as always but the enjoyment of meeting new people I graduated with but never had the chance to know along with my friends that go all the way back to kindergarten again made for an exceptional night out. Sincerely Bryan C. Peterson We are in the process of receiving stories from fellow classmates for our next newsletter. Please take a few minutes and send us your story. We would love to hear from you. Watch for the up-coming announcement for our spring planning meeting, all meetings are open to all class members. Please join in the fun, there is always room for more. We still need volunteers for the following committees: talent show, 4th of July float, entertainment, computer and fund raising. There was a suggestion to have a class garage sale with proceeds going towards costs of our 35th reunion. You are our eyes and ears for our class updates, so if you hear of any news that should be passed along to our class, please send it to us right away. Our warmest wishes to you all, Your RHS Class of 1972 Reunion committee volunteers PS: Your information and feedback is like fish food – it keeps us going…. Thank you!
