The following articles/announcements are items that have come from District 280 or other Richfield related sources. Some of these items may eventually be included in the Spotlite Spinoff alumni newsletter, but will be listed here in the mean time. Date Received: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 From: Norm Plasch Subject: RHS 50th Anniversary Celebration The RHS 50th Anniversary Celebration will take place in October, 2004. The Richfield School District is committed in making this a great event and I am hearing from people in the Richfield community and RHS Alumni who would like to make this a memorable time. Energy is building.... Events will include a 50 year birthday party on October 11th (50 years to the day that the school opened), Homecoming Football Game on October 15th, an Open House on October 16th and a 'potential' Alumni Event on either Saturday evening or Sunday, October 17th. On Tuesday, March 23rd there was an initial Steering Committee Kick-Off Meeting. Steering Committee Members included: Superintendent Barbara Devlin; RHS Principal, Jill Johnson; 'RHS at 50' Event Coordinator/Facilitator, Norm Plasch (RHS Class of '72); RHS Athletic Director, Jim Baker; Richfield Chamber President Steve Lindgren (RHS Class of '67) and Richfield Public Schools Foundation Rep, Scott Sharpe (RHS Class of '68). Date Received: Wed, 17 Mar 2004 From: Kari Johnson Subject: RHS Fastpitch Softball Alumni Game Website: http://rhssoftballalumni.cheeb.com Contact: Kari Johnson at tobehammer@msn.com When: Saturday, July 3rd, 2004 Check-In Time: 1pm Game Time: 2pm Where: Lincoln Fields (home the current RHS softball program) Why: It's a great way to reconnect with old friends and celebrate 27 years of RHS softball! Cost: $25 per alumni if registered by June 1st, 2004 (includes free personalized alumni game tshirt). Cost after June 1st is $35 (includes a non- personalized alumni game shirt). We invite you to bring your family and friends to this event. Bring your blankets and picnic baskets! Make it a festive afternoon watching the women from the 70's, 80's, 90's and today play! After the game head over to the City of Richfield's Street Dance at Vets Park which begins at 6pm. Proceeds from this event will go into a scholarship fund. His name is Steve Christoff. He graduated in 1976, a hockey star at RHS, U of M, and a gold medallist on the 1980 team. He was drafted and played for the North Stars ending his professional hockey career in 1984 after playing for the Calgary Flames and Los-Angeles Kings. Here is what is said about him at the US Hockey Hall of fame. Played three seasons under Herb Brooks at the University Of Minnesota and became the third player in Gopher history to break the 30-goal barrier. He tied for fourth in WCHA scoring 1978 with 38 goals and 21 assists for 59 points and was a second team WCHA all-star pick. His overall output of 38 goals and 39 assists led the Gophers in scoring. He was selected in the fifth round by the Minnesota North Stars in 1978 and was voted the Gophers' MVP in the same year. Had a great prep career at Richfield High School he was an all-state and All-American selection and led his team to the state finals in 1976. Greg Wasick '65 - Starting defensive back in 1963 and 1964. The 1964 team was the Minnesota State Champion. Lettered 3 years in baseball, pitching and playing outfield, and went on to play baseball for the University of Minnesota, serving as Gopher Captain in 1969. Chuck Thoresen '63 - Lettered in Football in 1960, 61, and 62, leading the Spartans to a Lake Conference and State Championship. Also played Baseball and Basketball. After graduation, Chuch pitched and lettered at the University of Minnesota. Chuck went on to teach and coach at Lakeville, Robbinsdale Cooper and Wayzata, and has recently retired. Bob Vessel '76 - Bob was the captain of the Richfield golf team in 1976 and placed 7th in the State. Bob attended Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University, and was a member of the Arizona team that won the 1985 U.S. Amateur Public Links Team Championship in Hawaii. Nick Fornicoia '89 - Nick won four letters in wrestling at Richfield with a record of 113-11-3. He wrestled in the State tournament three times and was the 1989 Class AA 112 lb. state champion. He was also on the 1988 National Team. Nick attended Augsburg College where he was a 3-time All American and won the Division III National Championship in the 123 lb. category in 1993. Nick currently serves as Assistant Coach at Eastview High School in Apple Valley where he was named Section 6AAAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000 - 01. |
